Early in 2020 I was given the opportunity to design the cover for a research book on the influence of manga (Japanese graphic novels) on popular culture and their subsequent involvement in general education. The editors requested a style similar to angular collages I had in my art portfolio. After several iterations we settled on these designs: close-up, sliced drawings of the faces of two prominent characters in classic series, with the back cover augmenting the design with portraits of each contributor to the book (most chapters were contributed by the editors' academic colleagues). I also formatted and compiled the book's chapters for print. InSEA and the editors have provided a free download for the book here.
Prior to the finalization of this design, I submitted several concepts for review. Of the alternatives not chosen, my favorite was a cover with a similar design to the final version, but based instead on a photograph I had taken in Tokyo some time ago. This one did not quite match the book's theme as well, but I am proud of both regardless.
